What is
a dye lot?

During the dyeing process, the yarn is immersed by the manufacturer in a large vat containing the prepared dye. All the yarn dyed in the same vat is assigned a dye lot number (called Dyelot or Party at DROPS). This number should not be confused with the colour reference (called Colour at DROPS), which refers to the shade itself: navy blue, deep red, dusty pink, and so on.

When a manufacturer wants to reproduce a colour, the dye is prepared again. Even with the same recipe, it is impossible to obtain exactly the same shade. The yarn dyed in this new batch will therefore receive a new dye lot number while keeping the same colour reference. This is why it is important to keep the labels from your balls of yarn until your project is finished.

If you run out of yarn, this will allow you to request the same dye lot, provided it is still in stock (an exhausted dye lot cannot be reproduced). Differences in shade between two dye lots are often visible.
